Eden Prairie High School Performing Arts Center

Eden Prairie, MN

The design challenge of the theater complex was to create a new performing arts center with a public identity, and to integrate the facility into the curricular environment of the school. The design team located all the public spaces, including the lobby, on the west exterior of the school to maximize educational opportunities. This orientation integrates the curricular parts of the theater including the stage, stage craft, costuming, and production areas into the educational block of the school. The public portion of the theater can be locked off during the school day while the educational components are accessible to students. To give the director flexibility in production, a catwalk system connects the control booth with the back stage area and contains two frontal and two side lighting bridges. The major aesthetic elements in the space are the sculptural acoustical devices, building structure, and the intentionally muted colors.

The primary public theater entrance is accessed via ramped plaza on the northwest side of the theater complex. Designated performance areas adjacent to the entrance plaza also encourage the interaction of the patrons and the performers. The addition of the theater on the west side of the school, which was the previous service area, creates a new public face and identity for the school’s performing arts programs.
