UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME DISTANCE LEARNING CENTER
WILLIAMSON, HAITI
University of Notre Dame
Distance Learning Center
Williamson, Haiti
The University of Notre Dame of Haiti, like similar Universities in Haiti and other developing countries, has a student population that does not have the resources to travel to or to stay in Port-au-prince to attend classes.
Traditional means of providing higher education to remote areas, with its substantial investment in infrastructure, buildings, and teachers, is beyond the reach of the University. An alternative non-conventional means of education is needed to replace the usual way of providing higher education to rural students. Technology is a great equalizer and a way to level the playing field in remote areas. It makes high quality education accessible in ways that are not otherwise attainable.
The proposed project will establish distance learning labs at each of the universities 7 campuses. The labs will include interactive video conference areas, computer technology labs and technology resource centers, flexible work space, and a student commons. Each of these labs will be connected to the main campus to leverage the University’s established infrastructure and instructional staff. The labs will give the remote students access to the University without the cost of relocating to Port-au-Prince.
